The individual faculty members of the Department of Biology
reside in modern, well-equipped research laboratories, located
in Gilmer
Hall (Bldg. #17) and the adjoining Chemistry
Building (Bldg. #10). All of these buildings are
equipped with advanced scientific instruments available for
biochemical, biophysical, cellular, molecular, neurophysiological
and behavioral research. Hourly parking for this area
is available in the Visitor
Parking Garage (area #8), conveniently located at the University
Bookstore.
Also located in Gilmer Hall is the W.M.
Keck Center for Cellular Imaging, which provides
technical expertise and specialized optical equipment for dynamic,
high resolution, real-time imaging of cells, and the Center
for Biological Timing. Near Gilmer Hall, the
department operates an expansive greenhouse, while away from
the University grounds the department operates the Mountain
Lake Biological Station, offering summer courses
and research facilities in field biology in the Allegheny Mountains
of southwestern Virginia.
The University
also maintains a variety of centralized instrumentation/service
facilities. These facilities include a Biomolecular Research
Facility which provides identification and analysis of proteins by mass spectrometry, DNA sequencing, gene chip analysis, RT-PCR, and chromatography; a Lymphocyte Culture Center; a Flow
Cytometry Facility; an Advanced Microscopy Facility; and a Transgenic
Core Facility. For a listing of other facilities, please click here.
The University
of Virginia has an excellent library system. The Biology/Psychology
Library is conveniently located in Gilmer Hall.
The Biology Department is also supported by the nearby Chemistry
and Science
& Engineering Libraries. The Claude
Moore Health Sciences Library, with its definitive
collection of health-related and basic biomedical journals,
is located within a ten minute walk from Gilmer Hall, in
the Health Sciences Center. All of the University libraries
provide a wide range of digital database services.
