More
than 300 children, parents and early childhood
educators from the Charlottesville community
are expected to attend “Jumpstart
for a Day,” a community involvement
event and learning fair led by U.Va. student
organizations as well as community organizations,
tomorrow from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in U.Va.’s
Amphitheater. In Charlottesville, 46 U.Va.
students serve as Jumpstart Corps members,
spending 10 to 15 hours a week with low-income
3- to 5-year-old children in four local
preschool programs. Students help the children
develop early language, literacy and social
skills, with the goal of preparing preschoolers
to take advantage of their educations,
beginning with the first day of kindergarten. Full
