Obese
girls in the early stages of puberty are
at risk for having high levels of androgens,
or male hormones, a condition that may
lead to health problems later, according
to a team of researchers from the University
of Virginia Health System. The obese girls
with higher testosterone may be at risk
for adult polycystic ovary syndrome,
according to co-author Dr. John C. Marshall,
professor of internal medicine and director
for U.Va.’s Center for Research in
Reproduction, one of 14 such centers in
the country. The researchers
are currently investigating how obesity
and high levels of male hormones might
contribute to the development of adolescent
and adult PCOS. Full

This
year’s appointment of National Academy
of Engineering member Joe C. Campbell (above)
as the Lucien Carr III Professor of Engineering
and Applied Science at the University of
Virginia marked the beginning of a new era
for scientific research at U.Va. Campbell
changed the face of the worldwide telecommunications
network with his invention of a critical
component called a high-speed avalanche photodiode,
designed to change photonic signals into
electronic signals extremely quickly, reliably
and with very little noise or distortion.
In coming years, researchers of Campbell’s
caliber will lead the University to be a
preeminent research institution in science
and enginering. Full
