Virginia
Gov. Tim Kaine has granted additional holiday
time for state employees in celebration of
Independence Day. Since the summer school
is in session and due to the 24-hour operations
requirements, the University of Virginia
will not observe this additional time on
July 3. Instead, qualifying U.Va. employees
will see an additional eight hours credited
to their leave balances as compensatory time,
or float time. This additional holiday time
will be credited to leave balances on July
3 and must be used within 12 months of the
date earned. For questions, call the University
Human Resources Leave Center at 924-1426
or 924-4404 or e-mail hrdept@virginia.edu.

Much
more than fireworks displays and family gatherings,
the Fourth of July represents America’s
declared independence from Britain and the
birth of Democracy. Visitors can view one
of only 25 surviving copies of the Declaration
printed on the night of July 4, 1776, at
the University of Virginia Library’s
permanent exhibit, “Declaring Independence:
Creating and Recreating America’s Document,” which
will be open to the public on July 4 from
9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with free admission and
guided tours throughout the day. The exhibit
highlights the collection given by U.Va.
alumnus Albert H. Small and also includes
printings of the Declaration through history,
letters and documents from the 56 signers,
and a 13-minute documentary film showing
the story of the events that led to the founding
of this country. Full
story.
