Whether it’s a parent of a student interested in the University of Virginia’s financial aid program, AccessUVa, a high school senior wanting to apply for admission or a college admissions counselor, the University of Virginia Office of Admission’s enhanced Web site provides information custom tailored to various types of users. The new site also features Flash slideshow introductions to Grounds, and to Charlottesville and the surrounding region, as well as a “what you could be doing today” section with links to local events and activities. Another new feature, “Ask a Student,” puts prospective students in contact with current students who can answer questions about the U.Va. experience. Full story.

Brian Wamhoff (left) is an assistant professor of internal medicine in the Division of Cardiology who focuses on smooth muscle cells. Brett Blackman (right) is an assistant professor of biomedical engineering who studies endothelial cells. Collaborative research between the two University of Virginia faculty members earned both a Fund for Excellence in Science and Technology (FEST) Distinguished Young Investigator Grant in 2005 that enabled the researchers to develop a novel, motor-driven device that allows for the co-culture of human endothelial and smooth muscle cells in an environment that exposes them to relevant blood flow forces. Specifically, it could lead to the creation of a cell-culture based diagnostic model for heart disease, the number one killer in the western world. Full story.
