How Jefferson’s Misinterpretations Led to His Masterpiece - The Lawn
Bruce Boucher, Director, U.Va. Art Museum
Thomas Jefferson called the architectural treatise by Andrea Palladio his "Bible" and encouraged others to use it as he did. However, Jefferson's knowledge of Palladio and of classical architecture was largely at second hand and through printed sources, which were in turn interpretations of Palladio's work. This led to creative misinterpretations that had an impact on Jefferson's masterpiece, the Lawn of the University of Virginia.

Is Our Ocean in Crisis? A Perspective on the State of This Precious Resource
Stephen Macko, Professor, U.Va. Department of Environmental Sciences
Perhaps 90% of the Earth’s population lives within 100 miles of the Ocean. That same Ocean, covering 71% of the planet, provides 1/6 of the World’s protein. Yet the threat to that ecosystem from climate change, pollution and overpopulation has never been greater than in the present. Stephen Macko, Professor, Isotope and Organic Geochemistry, Department of Environmental Sciences will discuss the current status of this precious resource.

What is the Defining Decade for Adulthood?
Meg Jay, Assistant Clinical Professor, U.Va. Curry School of Education
Meg Jay, Clinical Psychologist in the Curry School of Education specializes in young adult development. She will argue that those in their twenties have been caught in a swirl of hype and misinformation, much of which has trivialized what is actually the most defining decade of adulthood. Jay will share her research and what psychologists, sociologists, neurologists, human resources executives and reproductive specialists know about the unique power of the twentysomething years and how they shape lives. This knowledge is vitally important to parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and bosses in order to understand adulthood’s defining decade and how it impacts the individual’s life and those around them.

Larry Sabato’s Crystal Ball: Politics Is a Good Thing!
Larry Sabato, Professor and Director, U.Va. Center for Politics
In July 2008, Dr. Sabato correctly projected that Barack Obama would win the Presidency in a near-landslide. He predicted a 364-174 margin in the Electoral College, just one vote away from the final tally of 365-173, and he also forecast President Obama’s exact 53% popular vote margin. In addition, Professor Sabato accurately predicted 98% of Senate, House, and Governor winners in, 2006, 2008, and 2010—by far the best showing in the business.
Professor Sabato will now turn his “Crystal Ball” to the 2012 election and reflect on how the race has developed thus far and what is to come in the months and days leading up to November. Professor Sabato will address the important issues, the key states, and the leading characters in the race for the White House and take a look at the future of the Senate and House in 2012 and beyond.
