Asian Pacific American Studies... Requirements

Requirements for the Minor

Students are required to complete a minimum of six courses (18 credits) for the Asian Pacific American Studies minor. Of the six courses, students must complete three required courses and three electives.

Note:

  • No more than three courses (9 credits) can come from the same department.
  • No courses taken for the minor may be double-counted towards any major.
  • No more than one course (3 credits) taken outside of UVA can be counted towards the minor (study abroad or transfer credits).

Note: The theory requirement has been changed to a theory / comparative requirement, effective March 2009. All classes that previously counted towards this requirement will continue to count, but a few additional courses on African American and Latino/a Studies will be added to this list. This change only applies to new minors, accepted after Spring 2009.

Required courses:

1. One survey course on Asian Pacific American Studies
  • AMST 3180 / ENAM 3180: Asian American Cultural History
  • ANTH 2610: Asian America

2. One course on theory relevant to the study of Asian Pacific America, or on comparative racial formations in America:
  • AAS 1010: Introduction to African American and African Studies I
  • AAS 1020: Introduction to African American and African Studies II
  • AMST 2200: Latino/a Studies
  • ANTH 3010: Theory and History of Anthropology
  • CPLT 3600: Literary Theory
  • ENCR 3000: Contemporary Literary Theory
  • ENCR 3810: Feminist Theories and Methods
  • PLPT 3020: Modern Political Thought
  • PLPT 3030: Contemporary Political Thought
  • SOC 3410: Race and Ethnic Relations
  • SWAG 3810: Feminist Theories
3. One course on modern Asian transnational or Asian diasporic experiences from a pre-approved list, adjusted per semester depending upon availability. Eligible courses include:
  • ANTH 3630: Social Structure of China
  • HIEA 2101: Korea: Late Ninetenth through Early Twenty First Centuries
  • JPTR 1020: Introduction to Modern Japanese Literature
  • SAST 1010: Introduction to South Asia
  • PLCP 3630: Politics in India and Pakistan
Elective courses:

Three additional courses from a pre-approved list adjusted per semester depending upon availability. One of the three courses must be a 400 level seminar course in AMST or related discipline.

If the theory or transnational requirement has been met by a course that is being counted towards another major, they can be substituted by an additional elective course each, subject to approval from the minor director. Eligible courses include, but are not limited, to the following:
  • AMST 2220: Race, Identity and American Visual Culture
  • ANTH 2250: Nationalism, Racism, and Multiculturalism
  • ANTH 3155: Anthropology of Everyday American Life
  • ENAM 3570: Contemporary Ethnic American Fiction
  • EDLF 5550: Multicultural Education
  • SOC 4870: Immigration
