2006 Statistical Portrait of the Nation's Asian and Pacific Islander Populations

The UCLA Asian American Studies Center is pleased to provide this 2006 statistical portrait of the Asian American and Pacific Islander populations produced by the US Census Bureau for Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. The following are examples of few of the many statistics reported:

3.4%: Percentage growth of the Asian population between 2003 and 2004, the highest of any race group during that time period.

9.8%: Poverty rate for Asians in 2004, down from 11.8 percent in 2003.

8.7 million: The number of U.S. residents who were born in Asia. Asian-born residents comprise one-fourth of the nation's total foreign-born population.

NYC ImMigrant Heritage Trail- Summer Research Intern

The Lower East Side Tenement Museum's mission is to promote tolerance and historical perspective through the preservation and interpretation of the variety of immigrant and migrant experiences on Manhattan's Lower East Side, gateway to America. Currently, the Museum is working on a new project called the NYC ImMigrant Heritage Trail. The intern will assist the ImMigrant Heritage Project Associate to develop the NYC ImMigrant Heritage Trail. The intern will:

  1. Conduct survey of properties in the LES national historic district;
  2. Research historic, cultural, artistic and culinary sites related to the immigrant experience in NYC;
  3. Expand the database of sites in Manhattan and the other boroughs to be featured in the Trail;
  4. Identify potential partners and generate a list of contacts;
  5. Develop a list of additional resources on the immigrant experience, such as books, videos, activities and events;
  6. Research public transportation and parking facilities in NYC; and
  7. Work with museum staff and web designer to develop prototype of website.
Position will run May through September, hours are flexible.

Excellent research, communication, organization and writing skills required. Possess strong interest in the NYC immigrant experience. Knowledge of cultural institutions, service agencies, businesses, and transportation systems in Manhattan is helpful. Understanding of web design is highly desirable.

The Norm Mineta Internship Immersion Program
Deadline: February 3, 2006 (Applications after the deadline will be accepted on a space-available basis)

The Norm Mineta Internship Immersion Program was established by Congress to provide internship opportunities within the U.S. Department of Defense and other defense agencies for United States Asian American/Pacific Islander students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. The program will be offered during summer from May 24 - August 5, 2006

Students will receive a full scholarship covering The Washington Center's program fee, fully-furnished housing in the DC metro area, a weekly stipend of $250, and roundtrip travel to and from DC.

Smithsonian Minority Internship Program
Deadline: Postmarked by February 1, 2006 for Summer or Fall

The Office of Fellowships offers a number of opportunities for minority groups who are underrepresented in the Smithsonian scholarly programs. Stipend awards are available for interns to participate in supervised ongoing research, or museum-related activities for periods of ten weeks. Minority undergraduate and beginning graduate students are encouraged to apply.

Term: 10 weeks
Stipend: $400 per week

James E. Webb Internship Program
Deadline: Postmarked by February 1, 2006

This program was established to promote excellence in the management of not-for-profit organizations. Internships are offered to U.S. minority undergraduate seniors and graduate students majoring in areas of business or public administration. Interns are placed in offices, museums, and research institutes throughout the Smithsonian Institution.

Term: 10 weeks (starting in June)
Stipend: $450 per week

APAICS FELLOWSHIPS AND INTERNSHIP PROGRAMS FOR 2006-2007

The Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies (APAICS) has released applications for its 2006-2007 Fellowship Programs.

The Fellowship Programs are designed to provide opportunities to two individuals who are committed to Asian Pacific Islander American communities, and who plan to pursue careers in public service.

The two 2006-2007 Fellowship Programs are:
  1. Aratani Foundation/Daniel K. Inouye Fellowship Program
  2. Anheuser-Busch/Frank Horton Fellowship Program
There are three more fellowship/internship programs:
  1. 2006 Summer Internship Program
  2. 2006-2007 Sodexho Health Fellowship
  3. 2006-2007 California Endowment Health and Public Policy Fellow

CAPAL Scholarships

CAPAL offers three $2,000 scholarships to enable outstanding college students with the potential for leadership to work full-time and learn about ways to effect public policy in order to better benefit and serve Asian Pacific American communities.

The mission of CAPAL is to promote APA interests and success in public sector careers, to provide information and education on policy issues affecting the APA community, and to serve the APA community at large.

OCA Summer Internship Program
Deadline: 3/15/05

OCA's program is largest internship program for APIA college students in Washington, D.C. and it is the oldest program. We have produced many interns who have continued their careers in the public sector or have remained active within the APIA community.

Requirements
  • Undergraduate (If graduate students are interested in volunteering or working as fellows if funds are available, please contact the OCA office at 202-223-5500.)
  • Demonstrated interest in public affairs
  • Oral and written communication skills
  • Commitment to work for a minimum of 10 weeks (Internship term start and end dates are flexible and may work around intern's schedule.)

Smithsonian Institute's Asian Pacific American Program (SI APAP) Summer Internship Program
Deadline: 3/14/05

The SI APAP has two unpaid summer internships for UVA students. The internship is open to students at any of the UVA schools and at all class levels (1st - 4th+), graduate and undergraduate. Applicants must demonstrate sufficient experiential and/or academic knowledge of one or more of the following three Asian Pacific American communities: Japanese American, Filipino American and Vietnamese American.

Interested candidates must complete a two (2) page application, and submit all materials by email by 5pm EST on Monday, March 14th.
