BENNETT COLLEGE FOR WOMEN

Bennett College VA-NC LSAMP supportersInitiated in 2007, with support from the National Science Foundation, the VA-NC LSAMP Program is dedicated to increasing the recruitment and retention of students from underrepresented minority groups that pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

The alliance, coordinated by the University of Virginia, encourages these individuals to earn Baccalaureate degrees from one of the eight partner institutions in Virginia and North Carolina and pursue a graduate education.

LSAMP Objectives at Bennett

LSAMP scholars will be mentored by faculty and student tutors and will be encouraged and guided to participate in summer research experiences.

LSAMP scholars will receive stipend money and will be able to participate in a variety of enrichment and support activities offered through the Center for Math/Science Success at the Division of Natural & Behavioral Sciences and Mathematics.

LSAMP scholars will be eligible to participate in the LSAMP “Bridge to Doctorate Program” where they receive full tuition support and a stipend of $30,000 per year from the National Science Foundation, for the first two years of graduate study.

LSAMP Program Eligibility

Freshwomen who completed their first semester at Bennett College with an interest in majoring in Biology, Chemistry, Computer Sciences or Mathematics.

The student must have:

  • A 3.0 or higher grade point average (GPA).
  • A recommendation letter from a high school teacher or Bennett faculty.
  • A personal statement (400/500 words) describing personal goals, background and why she is interested in the program.
  • Completed and submitted a LSAMP scholarship application; and must be a U.S. citizen.
