Elizabeth City State UniversityThe Virginia– North Carolina Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation VA/ NC LSAMP program at Elizabeth City State University seeks to increase the number of African American, Hispanics, and Native Americans in technological education and enterprise. The University of Virginia, under the National Science Foundation’s Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (VA/NC AMP), leads a consortium of eight institutions that are charged with increasing the number of minority graduates in the fields of STEM over the next five years.

Program Objectives

  • To foster networking and interaction among students with similar interests.
  • To incorporate regional freshman orientation programs, oversight, management and technical assistance, and internal VA-NC LSAMP and external evaluation.
  • To widen the network of STEM faculty and increase the exchange of information among AMP faculty members and administrators.
  • To provide ongoing undergraduate research experiences.

VA-NC LSAMP Activities at ECSU

Include, but are not limited to:

  • Summer Bridge Program
    (For graduating high school seniors)
  • Faculty-Mentored Research
    (For ECSU STEM majors, preferably juniors and seniors)
  • Career Advisement
  • Peer Mentoring
  • Industry and National Laboratory Internships
  • Tutorial Services in “Gatekeeper Courses”

Who Is Eligible?

To be eligible for participation in the VA-NC LSAMP students must:

  • Express an interest in STEM disciplines such as:
    Aviation Science, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, Geological, Environmental and Marine Sciences, Mathematics, Physics, and Technology.
  • Enroll at Elizabeth City State University or any other participating institution. All bridge participants at ECSU are automatically enrolled upon acceptance into the program. The admission fee will be waived.
  • Be a graduating high school senior
  • Be African American, Hispanic or Native American
  • Have a minimum grade point average of 3.0
