JOHNSON C. SMITH UNIVERSITY

Johnson C. Smith UniversityThe Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation Summer Science Learning Community is only open to incoming freshmen students planning to major in science, technology,  engineering, and math (STEM).  The program aids first-semester freshmen in making a successful transition from high school to college.   The program provides an academic curriculum,   access to student support services, and an environment in which students can acclimate to campus and develop effective academic strategies.

LS AMP Program

The LSAMP program’s goal is to enhance students’ commitment to higher education with a particular emphasis on increasing the enrollment and graduation rate of underrepresented minorities earning baccalaureate degrees in science, technology, science and mathematics (STEM) disciplines.

We support students and help them grow with:

  • Thinking and learning skills
  • Problem solving techniques
  • Financial support

The LSAMP Research Students:

  • Hands-On Research Experience
  • Present their research at conferences
  • Prepare for graduate school

Activities supported by LSAMP are:

  • Summer Science Learning Community
  • Supplemental Instruction
  • Undergraduate Research Opportunities
  • Guidance with Outside Internship Opportunities
  • Tutoring, Advising, and Mentoring

Funding

Participants in the LS AMP Summer   Science Learning Community receive a stipend of $1,000, tuition, fees, insurance, room and board.  The program  period is June 22, 2008 to July 17, 2008.

Eligibility

Open to U.S. Citizens and Permanent U.S. Residents only.  We are especially interested in applications from students who have  a strong academic record and planning to major in the STEM disciplines (science, technology, engineering or mathematics).
