Socio-Cultural Anthropology

Regional Focus: The American South and Pacific Northwest.

Topical interests: Music, identity, cultural politics of class and race.

My research focuses on a musical encounter in the southern Appalachians that brings together what seem to be the poles of American political and cultural ideologies. I'm interested in conflation-areas where the far right and far left share common concerns or goals-as well as in music as a space of exchange and communication. Somewhat related are my interests in environmental politics, the idea of 'green,' local economies, sustainability, wood stoves, and gardening. In my spare time I play music, enjoy swing dance, and routinely get schooled by the anthropology running club.
