SUMMER LANGUAGE STUDY OF MAZATEC

N'aina Tindali ("May God take care of you"; the most common formal Mazatec phrase of greeting and valediction) & Thank you for your support in getting me to the field for in situ language instruction in Mazatec.

The photo: Don Patricio, a Mazatec shaman (standing, with "sombrero"), finally takes me on a visit to meet with his wife's family, none of whom had ever before seen a "white man"—a gesture of hard-won trust in this place of rampant suspicion. The Don was later to be my champion in an allegedly life-and-death struggle of sorcery vs. counter-sorcery.

I am grateful to you both!

Yours,

Edward Abse
