Regional focus: China.

Topical interests: culture theory, politics of culture, globalization, nationalism, development, social memory, philosophy of science .

I am interested in how concepts of modernization, development and progress influence perceptions of culture in China and how these are reflected in modern nostalgia, efforts for cultural preservation (for both the Han and minority groups) and presentations of China (and Chinese culture) to the world. I am also interested in how the Chinese interpret Western presentations of Chinese culture and how these outside representations influence cultural identity.
