Archaeology

Regional Focus: East Africa

Topical Interests: environmental archaeology; zooarchaeology; landscape and spatial analysis; sclerochronology

I am interested in understanding how humans have consciously and continuously interacted with their environment in order to create the conditions and landscapes we experience today. In what ways have human actions manifested themselves upon the environment? How have these manifestations affected subsequent generations and elicited further responses? These questions and concepts are important for the archaeological context, but may also be applicable for the current and future conditions which humans stand to encounter.

My research focuses on East Africa in general and the Swahili Coast in particular because a wide array of life-ways continue to be practiced along a region which contains a high concentration of ecological niches. Additionally, The Swahili Coast has long been a major facet of the Indian Ocean trading network, therefore interregional and international ideas have been interchanged along the coast for a great number of years. Identifying and understanding these ideas along with their subsequent environmental responses and potential application to the contemporary context are the activities which I am currently pursuing.
