The Program is held at
Yarmouk University in Irbid, Jordan. Yarmouk
University is a comprehensive university with an
enrollment of about 33,000 students. Irbid is a city
of approximately 500,000 inhabitants, 90 kilometers
(about 60 miles) northwest of Amman, the Jordanian
capital. It is located in the hills of northern
Jordan and enjoys temperate weather during the summer
months.
One of the primary goals of
this Program is to completely immerse the
participants in the Arabic language. Irbid is an
ideal setting due to its Arab-Muslim society. This
setting has a minimal number of foreigners that use
English.
Important historical and
archaeological sites such as Amman, Jerash,Um Qais,
the Dead Sea, the Jordan Valley, Petra and Aqaba, are
easily accessible from Irbid. Students will have
ample opportunities to visit these and other places
of interest during the two Program-sponsored
educational excursions, on weekends, during the
mid-session break, or at the end of the Program.

While US citizens can obtain a visa upon arrival at the Jordanian border, the Program urges participants in the strongest terms to obtain a visa in advance for the following reasons:
a) you can request a multiple entry visa in advance which enables you to exit and return to Jordan without extra expense;
b) visas at the airport/ borders are given for one entry only- meaning if you exit the country you will be charged more money every time you return to the country;
c) The Program participants will go through immigration faster upon arrival at the airport if all have visas in advance, meaning there will be no delay at the airport immigration counters; otherwise you will have to go and change money at banks in order to have Jordanian dinars to pay for the visa; and
d) if you have the visa in advance, you will be considerate of the other participants who have their visas in advance.
Following notification of an admission decision, the Program will provide instructions and visa application forms to accepted students via email. However, students are encouraged to visit the website of the Embassy of Jordan for further information on Jordanian visa requirements and the application procedure.
Students living near to the Jordanian embassy (Washington, DC) or a Jordanian consulate (check the Jordanian embassy’s website to find out where Jordanian consulates are located) are advised to visit the embassy or consulate in person. If this is not possible, students are urged NOT to send their passports in regular mail. Make sure to provide the requisite fee and a self-addressed, pre-paid envelope (such as Express or UPS) in order for the embassy to return your passport. The embassy/consulate will not pay to send back your passport if you do not include a self-addressed, pre-paid envelope.
