MEMORIAL BENCHES
BACKGROUND
The University welcomes contributions of commemorative benches to honor past individuals and groups associated with the University. If you are interested in contributing a bench, contact the Office of the Architect at 434- 924-6015 for more information.
PROCEDURE
Upon receiving a request to donate a bench, the Office of the
Architect will work closely with the donor to identify a suitable
location that is appropriate to the individual being honored and
that conforms to the University landscape plan.
BENCH STANDARD
The University's bench standard is a teak wood "Hyde Park" bench made by Kingsley-Bate, Inc. Benches must be anchored onto a brick pad or onto existing paved surfaces where appropriate.
Additions of commemorative brass plaques are welcomed. Plaques are two inches by six inches in dimension and must be attached to the center of the top rail of the bench. The content on the plaque must be reviewed by the Office of the Architect and the Office of Major Events (434- 924-3099) which will work closely with the donor to develop the wording.
COSTS
The typical total cost of a commemorative bench is $5,000. This
includes the purchase of the bench, the brick pad beneath the
bench, a brass plaque, and installation. Often benches can be
located on existing paving, which will reduce the total cost.
