The Committee met in Washington Hall at 3:30 P.m, Present were Messrs. Fishbane, Leback, Lovelace, Murray,, Odum,, and Sihler.

The chairman reported on the dendrochronology project. Since Mr. Holland has the necessary, experience to take cores safely, the chairman authorized him to proceed; and the coring has been done.

Mr. Fishbane reported that Davidia, proposed to replace the Poe Alley

wisteria, is a late 19th Century import from west China and is therefore not in accord with the historic character of the gardens. The chairman was directed to contact the Garden Club of Virginia about a recommendation.

The Committee discussed a letter from Mr. Leback outlining-L-cost estimates for widening the walks on the Lower Lawn. The chairman was directed to write to Mr. Catlin recommending the widening and transmitting the estimates.

The chairman reported that Mr. Sandy Gilliam has received an offer to donate a tree to shade the bus stop by Madison Hall on University Avenue. The Committee deferred action pending a site visit.

Mr. Leback reported several items for Mr. Steward:

1. The Sycamore (Platanus occidentalis) behind the Rotunda., approved for

removal, will finally come down.

2. No replacement has so far been found for the Acer diabolicum that

recently died on Monroe Hill.

The Committee approved the plan, suggesting that pines be used on the south side and that a large Sycamore (Platanus occidentalis) be substituted on the right front corner. 2. The Primary Care Center. The plans were reviewed and the complex was visited by the Committee. The plans were approved with the stipulation that size of trees be emphasized on the sides facing Jordan Hall and the proposed Parking Garage. Also., columnar trees are to be avoided.

The Committee adjourned at 5:00 p.m.

The next meeting of the Committee will take place at 3:30 p.m. in the conference room of Washington Hall on January 15th.
