MEETING MINUTES » MINUTES FROM 1981 » DECEMBER 10TH The Committee met in the North Oval Room of the Rotunda at 2:00 p.m. Present were Mrs. Rush, Misses Fechner, Kahn, and Kral, and Messrs..Caplow, Dueser, Howland, Murray, Sihler, and Steward. The minutes of 11 November were approved. The chairman announced that he had written, as directed by the Committee, to Mr. Sensbach about the planning of the McCormick Road project, to Mr. Middleton about the Garrett Hall bus stop area, and to Mrs. Gentry about parking around the Centel Building. The chairman announced the appointment of the Subcommittee on Arboretum Development consisting of Messrs. Fishbane, Howland, Steward, and Caplow, Chairman. The Subcommittee is charged to bring to the Committee recommendations for expanding the collections on the Grounds. Special attention is to be given to completing the collection of native species, but exotic species that can be expected to thrive and that increase the breadth of taxonomic and horticultural coverage are also to be sought. Mr. Steward asked for suggestions for locating three new trees that he has acquired. 1. Hedge Maple (Acer campestre). The Committee agreed that it be planted in the maple collection between the Rotunda and the Chapel. 2. Flowering Ash (Fraxinus ornus). A site northeast of Halsey Hall was suggested, and confirmed by a subsequent site visit. 3. Weeping Copper Beech (Fagus sylvatica var. pendula/,purpurea). A site at Faulkner House in front of the parking spaces at the main entrance was suggested and approved. Mr. Steward also reported the loss of, and the intended replacement of, the Japanese White Pine (Pinus parviflora) by Brooks Hall. Drought seems to have been the culprit. Mrs. Rush presented three projects from the Planning Department. 1. The Law School Circle - The Committee's most recent suggestion of three White Ash (Fraxinus americana) was rejected by the Law School. Mrs. Rush presented a new design for a central flower bed with Dusty Miller, Annuals, Azaleas, Holly and Sargents' Cherry (Prunus sargentii) as the centerpiece. On receiving the assurance that Law would undertake a special maintenance contract for the bed, the Committee capitulated and approved the proposal on motion by Mr. Howland, seconded by Mr. Dueser. 2. The Hospital Daffodils - The Antiques Club of Charlottesville has proposed to plant bulbs in memory of Mrs. Mary Stamp at the entry to the hospital. Mr. Steward moved, and Mr. Dueser seconded, that the proposal be approved and that Mrs. Stamp's name be added to the list of personal memorials. The motion carried. 3. The Cemetery Columbarium - A group of alumni represented by Mr. Leigh Middleditch propose the construction of a 200-300 unit columbarium. on the north side of the University Cemetery. This would consist of approximately 60 feet of wall 7 feet high. The Committee discussed the impact of such a structure on (a) the new planting in this area and (b) the general amenity of the cemetery and instructed Mrs. Rush to take back to Planning a generally negative opinion of the suggestion, pending the submission of more detailed plans. The chairman then introduced the question of revising the tree map. Mr. Steward and he had been approached by Mr. Richard Feldman, a graduate student in Environmental Sciences, who has been assisting in laboratory exercises in tree identification. Mr. Feldman noted several inaccuracies on the map and offered his services for carrying out a revision. The chairman divided the question into three: (1) Is it appropriate to have a revision now? (2) Should the labeling system be revised and continued? (3) Should we hire qualified graduate students to help with revising the map and labeling trees? There was general support for a revision of the map in the near future and for improving and continuing the labeling. Mr. Steward and the chairman were directed to investigate the available types of labels and to report to the Committee. They were also directed to discuss with Mr. Feldman a possible arrangement whereby he might undertake revision of the map. Mr. Steward emphasized the necessity of continuing the work around the seasons in order to get buds, leaves, flowers and fruit and of devising some means of checking the proposed revisions. In answer to a question about the planting for the Clemons Library, Mrs. Rush reported that an outside consultant has been hired to draw up a design for the terrace. Mr. Steward confirmed that planting of the surrounding areas was proceeding, with the camellias already in bloom. The Committee then repaired to Halsey Hall to view prospective sites for the above-mentioned flowering ash. Following agreement on the northeast location, the Committee adjourned at 3:30 p.m. The next meeting of the Committee will be held in the conference room of Physical Plant at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 20th. |
