Creating a Walking Environment

The University should foster a more collegial academic environment by creating a circulation system that promotes walking, cycling and light transit service as primary modes of transportation around Grounds. By emphasizing pedestrians and cyclists over vehicles, a safer environment is also established. Planning initiatives in support of this principle include:

Establishing a network of walkways, known as the "Groundswalk", linking all areas of the University
Restricting vehicular traffic on McCormick Road and widening sidewalks
Installing a sidewalk and bicycle path along the north side of Jefferson Park Avenue
Constructing a bicycle/pedestrian path to Hereford College from the Alderman Road Dormitories
Creating a pedestrian bridge connection over Jefferson Park Avenue behind Cabell Hall as part of the South Lawn project
Constructing a pedestrian bridge over Emmet Street
