Integrating Academic, Residential, and Recreational Uses in Functional
Zones
Jefferson's original plan for the University fostered a sense of
community by combining academic, residential and recreational uses
into a compact "village" setting. Following this successful
model, new development should integrate such complementary functions
as student and faculty housing, teaching and research, administrative
activities, sports and recreation, dining and retail support. Planning
initiatives in support of this principle include:
