TREE DONATIONS

Background
The University has a long-standing tradition of planting commemorative trees to honor individuals from its academic community. Trees are planted both officially by the University as part of the Founder's Day celebration and privately by alumni and friends of the University.

Donation Procedure for Private Trees
A person or group wishing to donate a private commemorative tree to the University should contact the Office of the Architect at 434-924-6015. Working closely with the donor and Landscape Superintendent, the Office of the Architect develops a proposal for a tree species and location. This proposal is then presented for approval by the Arboretum and Landscape Committee. The approved tree will be planted by the Landscape Division in the appropriate season. The University does not allow commemorative plaques to be installed on or near trees. Plaques may only be installed as part of a memorial bench, which can be given in association with a tree.

Dedication Ceremonies
Tree dedication ceremonies are usually arranged by the donor with the assistance of either the Office of Student Affairs, the Alumni Association, or, when appropriate, a particular school, college or department of the University.

Cost
The cost of planting a memorial tree on the grounds is $1,000. This includes a donation toward the memorial tree maintenance fund, which assures the perpetual care and replacement of all University memorial trees.
