In 1904, Dr. Alderman became the first president of the
University of Virginia, a title he held for twenty seven
years until his death. He worked tirelessy to promote
the idea of "education for all". As a member
of the General Education Board under Woodrow Wilson, Alderman
became nationally known as a promoter of universal education.
The University's main library is named in his honor. He
is buried in the University of Virginia's cemetery. |
