Dr.
Allan Talbott Gwathmey was a member of the Chemistry Department
faculty at the University of Virginia from 1947 until
his death in 1963. He received a bachelors of science
degree from Virginia Military Institute in 1923, a bachelors
in electrochemical engineering from MIT in 1928 and earned
a Ph.D. in Chemistry in 1938 from the University of Virginia. |
|
His extensive research on corrosion chemistry spanned some 25
years. Professor Gwathmey received the Distinguished Service
Award from the Virginia Academy of Science in 1953. He was instrumental
in persuading the Academy to found an institute devoted to basic
research, and in 1948 the Virginia Institute for Scientific
Research was born. |
