Frank Hartman was the director of the University of Virginia's Department of Buildings and Grounds from 1932-1958. He was involved in numerous building and utility projects, including the McCormick Road and Mary Munford dormitories, New Cabell Hall the Physics Building, Navy ROTC Armory, Alumni Hall and Newcomb Hall. |

Hartman was also responsible for a number of significant plantings on University Grounds including southern magnolias and white pines along Emmet Street, American hollies around the Chapel and Catalpas beside the Monroe Hill dormitories. He was also responsible for numerous boxwood plantings including the replacement of privet hedges north of the Rotunda and box hedges to screen the West Range dorm room windows. His office was in one of the ground floor oval rooms in the Rotunda. |
