Frank Hereford, University of Virginia President from 1974-1985, studied physics at the university as both an undergraduate and a Ph.D. candidate. Following his education, he conducted research in cosmic rays at the Bartol Research Foundation in Pennsylvania. Hereford returned to the university to teach in 1949. He served as University Provost from 1966-1971. Hereford then returned to teaching and research until 1974 when he took office as president, a title he held until 1985.

Frank met his wife Ann while attending the University of Virginia in undergraduate school. Ann attended Sweetbriar College at the time. While Frank taught at the university, Ann enrolled and graduated with a bachelor's degree. Ann was immensely helpful to Frank when he served as president, being an expert entertainer. She took a great interest in the gardens at Carr's Hill, planting many bulbs, flowers and trees.
