In honor of George Frederick Holmes Tree species: Gymnocladus dioicus Common name: Kentucky Coffee Tree Location: Pavilion Garden VI Date planted: 1880 (rededicated 1997) George Frederick Holmes (1820-1897) taught English literature and history for 40 years at the University of Virginia. Prior to coming to the university, he served as President of the University of Mississippi and taught at both Richmond College and William and Mary.
