From 1945 to 1959, Malone was a professor of history at Columbia
University. He returned to Charlottesville as Thomas Jefferson
Foundation professor emeritus and biographer-in-residence
in 1962. He completed "Jefferson and His Time" in
1981. He was given the Pulitzer Prize in 1975 for his "magnum
opus" and in 1983 was awarded the Presidential Medal
of Freedom.
