William
McGuffey, an ordained minister in Bethel Chapel of the Presbyterian
Church in Ohio, accepted the invitation to become the Chair
of Moral Philosophy at the University of Virginia in 1845. McGuffey's
appointment was significant since he was the first minister
to hold a position on the faculty of the University. He was
the author of the well-known 19th century McGuffey Eclectic
Readers. The original McGuffey ash died in 1990, and the present
ash is a graft of its parent. The original tree was planted
in 1826.
