James Monroe, fifth President of the United States, served two terms beginning in 1817. In addition to President, he served in many political venues in his lifetime, such as Secretary of State, Secretary of War, Senator of Virginia, Governor of Virginia and the Virginia Assembly.During the American Revolution, Monroe fought with distinction in the Continental Army. After the war, he returned to Virginia where he studied law under Thomas Jefferson and also helped to govern the fledgling University of Virginia. James Monroe once owned the land now known as "Monroe Hill" on the present-day University of Virginia Grounds.
