rederick Doveton Nicols, a distinguished scholar of architectural
history, was instrumental in the 1976 restoration of the
Rotunda. Freddie also served the University of Virginia
as the Cary D. Langhorne Professor of Architecture and
chairman of the Department of Architectural History. |
|
He lectured and wrote extensively on Jefferson's architectural
legacy and founded a program in historic preservation in the
School of Architecture that in the 1960's was only the second
of its kind. Freddie was an inspiring professor, receiving in
1975 the Alumni Association's Distinguished Professor Award
and in 1979, the prestigious Thomas Jefferson Award. Freddie
Nichols is buried in the University of Virginia cemetery. |
