Meade Palmer, an accomplished and talented landscape architect,
died at age 85 while still running his very active private
practice. He graduated from Cornell University and began
a career that spanned 60 years. He interned in the office
of Charles Gilette, prominent Virginia landscape architect.
In World War II, Meade served as a naval intelligence
officer in the South Pacific. |

In 1948, he opened his private practice in Warrenton, Virginia.
Meade joined the faculty of the Department of Landscape Architecture
at the University of Virginia in 1961, teaching plant identification
and planting design.
Some of his most notable works include the Lyndon
B. Johnson Memorial, Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington Cemetery,
Virginia State Capital Darden Garden, Woodrow Wilson Parkway,
Sky Meadows State Park, Mount Rogers State Park and the Valentine
Museum and the Museum of the Confederacy. Meade also consulted
on several University of Virginia sites including Carr's Hill,
Morea House and Boar's Head.
