In 1978, the Arboretum and Landscape Committee honored
Walter M. Steward with a planting of a group of pines
from the former Seward Forest on the south side of Brook's
Hall. The Seward Forest in Brunswick and Greensboro counties
was willed to the University of Virginia by Walter Seward,
for use as experimental plantations.
The
University decided to sell the Seward forest, but in doing so
created the Seward fund, which is managed by the Arboretum and
Landscape Committee. This endowment has grown over the years
and has funded numerous plantings and grounds improvement projects
throughout the grounds of the university.
