Edgar Finley Shannon, Jr. attended Washington & Lee
University, from which he graduated summa cum laude. He
received masters degrees from both Duke and Harvard Universities.
Beginning at a remarkably young age of 40, Shannon was
fourth president of the University of Virginia, serving
from 1959-1974. |
|
Working to
bring the University into national prominence, Shannon concentrated
his efforts on attracting a renowned faculty and building first-rate
facilities on Grounds to meet the needs of the faculty and students.
During his tenure at the University, enrollment went from a
mere 5,000 to 15,000 students. Following his term as president,
Shannon returned to full-time teaching as Commonwealth Professor
of English and was elected president emeritus in 1988 by the
Board of Visitors.
