The President's Committee on Sustainability was created in Fall 2008 to advise President John T. Casteen III and Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Office Leonard Sandridge on all matters related to
the overall quality, diligence, and progress of the University's commitment to sustainability. More information, including the full charge of the committee and its membership, can be found here.
History of the Committee
The 2006 UVa. Sustainability Assessment put forth the recommendation to create a panel of University experts to advise the University on how best to further its sustainability objectives. As a result of this recommendation, the Sustainability Advisory Panel (SAP) was created in Spring 2007 and met regularly for over a year. In Summer 2008, President Casteen asked that a presidential level committee be convened to advise University leaders on all matters relating to sustainability. With the SAP serving as the model, the President's Ccommittee on Sustainability was formed in the Fall and met for the first time on December 4, 2008.
Structure of the Committee
The committee consists of 18 voting members and includes faculty, staff and graduate and undergraduate students representation. There are four working subcommittees: Community Outreach and Communications, Schools and Department Initiatives, Policies and Procedures, and Environmental Impact.
