I.D. Cards available for new grad students August 3 - 21, Student Activities Building, Alderman Road

TA WORKSHOP: August 16 and 17.

All TAs are required to attend the teaching workshop organized by the Teaching Resource Center.

GRADERS

Undergraduate courses with 50 or more registered students will have a grader. Graduate students interested in grading should attend the first meeting of the course that interests them and speak to the instructor. Requests for graders should be made by both faculty and students to the Graduate Director. Students will be informed of the selection in the second week of the semester. Duties of Graders.

ADVISING For incoming Students August 18.

Douglas Fordham will be advising on course selection in Fayerweather Hall 308. Pleaseset up and appointment if you have not already done so.

MASTERS THESIS

All second-year M.A. students should be registered in ARAH 8091, and should begin meeting regularly with their M.A. Thesis advisor.

OUTSIDE FELLOWSHIPS: late August

Students who wish to apply for Kress, CASVA or any other outside fellowships should discuss their plans with their advisor(s) and inform the Graduate Director of their interest. Students applying for grants should note that the University deadline for Ful bright applications is usually late September.

PHD FIELD EXAM

Any student who expects to take the field exam for the Ph.D. in fall or spring term should discuss the matter with their advisor and inform the Graduate Director of their intention with a probable date for the exam.

Graduate Committee Deadline September 16.


PhD Field and dissertation Proposals due for consideration by the Graduate Committee.
Please submit Proposals to the DGS digitally. Proposals must have been approved by your Dissertation Advisor.

OUTSIDE FELLOWSHIPS

Progress report is due to the Graduate Director by September 16, from all students applying for outside fellowships requiring departmental nomination. Due date for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York is November 2, Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts (CASVA) is November 15, and the Kress is November 30. Students must request nomination letters from the Chairman, Howard Singerman.

DEGREE CANDIDATES FOR JANUARY GRADUATION

All students who intend to receive their degree in January must be registered for the Fall Semester. Non-Residents must be registered by October 1.

ADVISING

CAA DISSERTATION LISTING: November 15.

Students who have had their dissertation proposals formally accepted and approved may register the title of the dissertation with the College Art Association. In the past dissertations have been listed in the June issue of the Art Bulletin. As of 1999 dissertations will be posted on the CAA website in late June. A list of dissertations approved by the Program will be sent to CAA by e-mail. The CAA deadline for the June 2012 list is January 15, 2012. The Program deadline is December 15, 2011.

DEGREE DEADLINE: February 1

Last day for submitting graduate degree application for May graduation to Enrolled Student Office, 438 Cabell Hall.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE STUDY: February 15

Students who need intensive study of a foreign language that is required for their dissertation research must inform the Graduate Director of their intended course of study, cost of tuition, and living expenses no later than February 15.

MUSEUM INTERNSHIP

Any student wishing to be considered for the Luzak-Lindner internship should inform the Graduate Director of their intention to submit an application.

M.A. THESIS: February 24

Three copies of completed draft of M.A. Thesis due in Art Department office for Second Year students expecting to graduate in May.

CAA ANNUAL CONFERENCE: February 22-25

Will meet in Los Angeles, February 22-25, 2012.

March

DEPARTMENT FINANCIAL AID: March 15

Requests for financial aid from both University and departmental resources are due by March 15. Application Forms for work-study and student loans may be obtained from the Office of Financial Aid to Students at 918 Emmet Street (PO Box 9021, Charlottesville, VA 22906, tel. 982-6000). The application form for fellowships and Taships administered by the department are distributed to students in early February. All students must attach a CV & a transcript of grades [available on SIS] to the department's application. Guidelines for writing a CV.
Notification of awards waits upon budget and tuition information sent from the Dean’s Office and may be made as late as May 1.

PROCEED TO PH.D: March 15

Second-year students who wish to proceed to the Ph.D. must write a letter to the Graduate Director requesting to be admitted to the Ph.D. program and name their dissertation advisor by March 15.
