Admission

Admission into the Studio Art program is open to any University of Virginia student accepted into the College of Arts and Sciences. A portfolio is not required when students apply to U.Va. However, if you wish to have your portfolio considered as part of  the admissions process, you may send slides of your work to the Admission Office along with your application. Do not send your portfolios to the Art Department. For questions concerning deadlines, requirements, and all other information about admission to the University of Virginia, please contact the Undergraduate Admission Office, 434-982-3200.

All static portfolios must be submitted in slide form. Please do not send originals. Slides will not be returned. Slides should be submitted in a clear plastic sleeve. An ideal slide portfolio should include the following:

  • (5) slides of drawings
  • (15) slides of other fine art works (slides of paintings, sculptures, prints, and photographs, are preferred.  Crafts are not part of the U.Va. program and slides of these works should not be included.)
  • If video and film are a major part of your work, you may also submit a short video (no more than 5 minutes total running time).
  • Separate numbered, typewritten list of your works of art, each item of which should be labeled as follows:
    • Your full name, including middle initial
    • Date of birth
    • Title of piece
    • Dimensions
    • Red arrow pointing up to indicate the direction slide should be viewed
    • Medium
    • Number in upper left corner
    • A brief resume, outlining your art experience, and a short statement that describes your goals and plans for the study of the fine arts while at U.Va. as well as your long term goals concerning the visual arts.

Please note, if you receive a 4 or 5 on your Advanced Placement Studio Art test you will receive 3 credits for ARTS 000. These credits do not count towards the fulfillment of your major or minor requirements for Studio Art.
