TABLE SAW

What this tool is primarily used for:

The Table Saw is primarily used for making ripping cuts, but can also be used for crosscutting on properly clamped, short length materials. Use the Miter Saw for crosscuting long lengths. The Table Saw is also used for making accurate beveled rip cuts, squaring off material, and specialty cuts (dados, rabbets, grooves, etc.) The Circular Saw is the hand-held counterpart to the Table Saw

ALWAYS USE APPROPRIATE PPE WHEN USING THIS MACHINE

SAFETY FOR THIS MACHINE:

  • THIS TOOL IS LOCKED OUT and is only accessible to students who are working with trained users
  • DO NOT operate while under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or medication
  • DO NOT CUT ANY METALS ON THIS SAW. You must use the appropriate chop saw in the metal shop
  • GUARDS ARE TO BE USED AT ALL TIMES
  • DO NOT modify machine to cut without the safety devices. Exceptions may be made for specialty cuts (e.g. dados) where the splitter and anti-kick back fingers cannot be used. Check with the shop supervisor before disengaging the splitter on the table saw. See the frame-making setup example below
  • DO NOT adjust rip fence until blade comes to a complete stop
  • DO NOT REMOVE jammed wood while saw is still on. Wait until blade comes to a complete stop
  • DO NOT START saw with wood in contact with blade
  • ALWAYS BE AWARE of where your fingers are in relation to the blade and blade guard
  • USE PUSH STICKS AND BLOCKS when ripping narrow stock
  • DO NOT ADJUST height or angle of blade while machine is running
  • ALWAYS feed work INTO the rotation of the blade, as opposed to with the direction of rotation. Work from the side of the saw with the ON/OFF switch
  • NEVER stack material to be cut on the table saw. Cut only one piece at a time
  • NEVER USE the fence as a cutoff gauge when crosscutting, as this can bind the blade. This WILL kickback smaller pieces of wood at EXTREMELY high velocities
  • WORK WITH AN ASSISTANT when cutting large or long pieces on the table saw, to support the edge or end of pieces being sawed. The assistant does not "feed" the material into or pull it through the saw. This can cause the operator to loose their balance if the work piece moves more rapidly then they anticipated and the operator can fall into the saw
  • TURN OFF machine if you need to step away for a moment
  • TURN OFF machine when done cutting and do not leave until the blade has come to a complete stop. Make sure guard is still over the exposed blade when leaving the table
  • WHEN DONE CUTTING, reset blade back to vertical position, make sure guard is over blade, and lower blade below table surface
  • REFER to instruction manual for further information (see Studio Technician)

OTHER THINGS TO REMEMBER WHEN USING THIS MACHINE:
