CHI WARA: A CLOSER LOOK,Antelope horns
A CLOSER LOOK at the Chi Wara
Headresses: ANTELOPE HORNS
Can you recognize the pair of horns on each of
these antelope
headresses?
The artist included these long horns to refer to the mythical
antelope,
Chi Wara
who was believed to be the
first to teach the Bamana people to farm.
To insure a good harvest, they celebrate
their ancestry by dancing with the Chi Wara headdresses
on their heads.
The artist included the strong horns to
also remind the
farmers of the hoes they use to cultivate the land and of the tall
millets of corn that grow as a result of their hard labor.
