CHI WARA

A CLOSER LOOK at the CHI WARA headdress

Can you find which chi wara has the rays of the sun on its back?

The one on the right has three rows of triangles that look like the rays of the sun. The farmers use this headdress to celebrate the role of the sun in producing a good harvest.

The costume that the performer wears is made of long strands of dried grass. If the triangular pattern means the sun, what might the many strands of grass look like? (Hint: What else do plants need besides the sun?)

The long strands of grass look like the many drops of RAIN.
