Writer's Eye 2003

George Garrett, appointed Poet Laureate of Virginia in July 2002, will judge the high school and adult poetry categories of the Writer's Eye 2003. Currently the Henry Hoyns Professor of Creative Writing, Emeritus, at the University of Virgina, Mr. Garrett has also taught at a number of other distinguished universities and has had a varied literary career, publishing in almost every genre. Generous with his time and expertise and always interested in aspiring young writers, Mr. Garrett returns as a judge for the 17th year of our competition.

Judge for the high school and adult prose categories is Mariflo Stephens. A daily newspaper journalist for 10 years before turning to fiction writing, Ms. Stephens is a prize-winning essayist and short story writer. She has read and discussed her work on the Oprah Winfrey show and on the Oxygen network. In addition to her other awards, Ms. Stephens is the 1990 adult prose category winner of the Writer's Eye. She takes great pleasure in returning to the Writer's Eye, this time as a judge.
