Ensuring the
conservation of collections
In summer 2009, the Museum participated alongside more than 100 other institutions in a Conservation Assessment Grant (reCap) through Heritage Preservation, The National Institute for Conservation. The collection and building were assessed by a conservator with expertise in preventive conservation and an architect/engineer with historic structures experience.
In December 2007, Walter Newman, director of paper conservation at the Northeast Document Conservation Center in Andover, Massachusetts, surveyed over 250 drawings in the Frederick and Lucy S. Herman Collection and over 60 prints in the T. Catesby Jones Collection. Art history graduate students and faculty participated in this survey, which determined conservation priorities and provided a valuable educational opportunity.
