Featuring works recently acquired by UVaM, Emilio Sanchez: Cityscapes will examine the life and work of the Cuban-American artist Emilio Sanchez, with a particular focus on his urban scenes. Sanchez, who spent most of his life in the United States, studied architecture at the University of Virginia before moving to New York City to attend the Art Students League.

Although he is perhaps best known for his depictions of brightly colored Caribbean structures, urban scenes were equally important to Sanchez. New York City, where Sanchez lived from 1944 until his death in 1999, was especially prominent in his oeuvre. In these works, Sanchez, a representational artist, applied a modernist—even at times abstract—language to his subjects, which, perhaps reflecting his background as an architect, ranged from towering skyscrapers to street-level bodegas. Visual details that would distract from structural investigations were minimized, even eliminated, allowing him to focus almost exclusively on the interaction between color and form.
