Writer's Eye 2007 Tours What will your tour be like? Tours are inquiry-based and involve a variety of activities designed to highlight relationships between the works designated for this year’s contest and writing. During the tour, students and docents engage in discussion relating to connections between art and writing. For example, students may write a poem, “flesh out” characters in a painting, develop dialogue between them, or discuss similarities and differences between artists’ and writers’ narrative treatments of various themes. Students are encouraged to use rich descriptive language. Tours are 45 minutes with an additional 15 minutes for writing and note-taking. Groups will have the opportunity to see many, if not all, of the selected works, although there will not be time to discuss all of them. New this year, the Museum is offering a self-guided tour for educators who prefer to lead their own class tour. All tours, including self-guided tours, must be scheduled in advance due to the number of groups in the building at any one time. How to book a tour To book a docent-led or self-guided tour, contact the Museum's Education Department at least two weeks in advance. Call 434.243.2050 or email museumeducation@virginia.edu. Selecting a work of art To view the selected artworks you may visit the Museum during Museum hours Tuesday-Sunday, 1 p.m. - 5 p.m., or you may book a group tour. Tours are available Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., and on weekends by appointment. Artworks selected for the Writer's Eye competition have a “WE” icon on the wall label. During a tour, students will have the opportunity to consider which work of art they would like to write about for the competition, although they do not need to make a final decision on the day of the tour. All works selected for Writer’s Eye works are available on the Museum's website. Teachers will receive a Writer's Eye educational packet upon arrival for their group's tour. The packet includes a list of the selected artworks as well as a photocopy with small images of the pieces. The materials may be copied for educational purposes, as needed, by the teacher. Entering the contest All information and entry forms will be on a table in the Museum's Entrance Hall and can also be downloaded. The deadline for all entries is 5 p.m., December 21, 2007.
