National Geographic Museum
Terra Cotta Warriors
Thursday, November 19
It's opening day for the Terra Cotta Warriors at the National Geographic Museum! Please join us on November 19 for a day's trip to Washington DC to visit Terra Cotta Warriors: Guardians of China's First Emperor, and be among the first visitors in the region to view one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of the 20th century.
The exhibition offers an in-depth look at the enormous tomb complex of China's First Emperor, Qin Shihuangdi, who ruled from 221-210 BC. The terra cotta warriors were discovered in 1974 by a group of farmers digging a well near Xi'an in Shaanxi province. More than 1,000 life-size figures have been restored as part of the site's ongoing excavation, and the National Geographic Museum showcases 15 of these terra cotta figures, representing soldiers, archers, acrobats, and animals, and 100 sets of objects, including stone armor, weapons, and bronze vessels. The terra cotta figures were created in an assembly-line fashion, and molds were used to mass-produce hands, heads, and ears. Craftsmen sculpted individual armor details and facial features by hand. No two faces are alike.
Following our visit to Terra Cotta Warriors, the bus will drop us off at the intersection of M Street and Wisconsin Avenue, in the heart of Georgetown. You will have ample time to have lunch on your own and shop at your leisure at any number of nearby restaurants and specialty stores. On November 19, handouts will be provided with suggested restaurants for every taste, as well as unique stores at which you can jumpstart your holiday shopping.
