Community Art Meets EcologyIn the spring of 2006, the UVa Arts Board and the UVa Art Museum, in collaboration with the Virginia Arts of the Book Center, The Bridge, and other community groups sponsored visiting artist Alberto Rey for his "Local Species Project". The project allowed community youth and workshop mentors to document local wildlife species and investigate the relation of ecosystems to local culture and conditions.
Young artists first explored local ecology. They then created collaborative book projects that incorporated writing, drawing, linoleum block cutting and printing, hand coloring, and book binding. The result was a cross-community and inter-species project!
