Local Stream Visit - North Fork of Moorman's Creek: Rey, project coordinators, local educators, and students from the Living Education Center will embark on an expedition to the North Fork of Moorman's Creek, a local trout stream. Everyone will observe the fish in their natural habitat.

Field Trip to Moorman's Creek this Saturday, Jan 28.

Rey, project coordinators, local educators, and students from the Living Education Center will embark on an expedition to the North Fork of Moorman's Creek, a local trout stream. Students considering involvement in the workshops are welcome if accompanied by a parent or guardian. Everyone will observe the fish in their natural habitat.

Those interested in carpooling and caravaning should meet at 9.45 am on Saturday in the parking lot immediately in front of the Dell Studio Art Modules beside Ruffner Hall. It's in the gray space bounded by Ruffner, Physics, and Bonnycastle on this UVa campus map. To see the spot marked on the same map, click here. We will leave by 10 am. Travel time to Moorman's Creek is about 25-30 minutes. Everyone should pack a snack or light lunch, as we probably won't finish at the creek until 1.30 - 2 pm.

Directions to Moorman's Creek from the Dell Modules:
1) Turn left out of Bonnycastle Circle onto McCormick
2) Immediate left before the bridge, head down ramp and turn left onto Emmet St.
3) Continue on Emmet St, approx 1.5 miles
4) Turn Left on Barracks Rd and go 2.4 miles
5) Barracks turns into Garth; continue on Garth 9.1 Miles (after 3.8 miles the road bears right, do NOT turn left onto Owensville at this point - you still have 5.3 miles to go on Garth)
6) After the 9.1 miles on Garth you will reach White Hall. The road forks a few ways. Bear slightly left (though it is mostly straight) and get on Sugar Hollow Rd and go 5.5 miles up past the reservoir.
7) The road conditions continue to get worse, but there is parking right along the stream bed.

March 16-21

Although Alberto was unable to make the return trip, the second field trips to Moorman's creek was a success. The younger printer class came and explored, as did many of the mentor. The long-awaited stream shocking conducted by the Game Commission biologists also brought everyone closer to some beautiful brook trout.
