"I have spent my entire life with museum work," said Jo Rowan.
When her children were small, she volunteered at Old Economy Village, an historic restoration of a 17th century community near Ambridge, Pennsylvania. When her family moved to Washington DC, she spent 15 years as director of product development at the Smithsonian Institution. And when she retired from that job, she volunteered in the social office at the White House for seven years during the Clinton administration.
“I like contributing to the history and knowledge of the community,”
Rowan said. “Whether it's children or adults, we're constantly learning.”
So when she and her husband returned to the Charlottesville area where he grew up, it was only natural for Rowan to find a museum where she could volunteer. She's been an active member of the Museum's Volunteer Board for more than ten years, with nearly half of that spent as chair managing the board's manifold projects and programs.
