Drawing on the Museum's permanent collection, this exhibition displays a cross-section of the dynamic printmaking scene in the United Kingdom during the 1970s. British Pop is well-represented, for example, by Patrick Caulfield's refined still-lifes and interiors and Joe Tilson's images on themes taken from Greek antiquity. Works by Patrick Heron, Terry Frost, and Robyn Denny explore, in different ways, the sheer visual power of pure abstraction. Many of the exhibition's artists made their prints at the Kelpra Studio in London, a hotbed of printmaking innovation in this era, especially of screenprinting. While the exhibition showcases a variety of techniques, it focuses on the aesthetic possibilities and implications of this modern printmaking method.
