The South is many things to many people. Southern Views is a survey of recent Museum acquisitions in photography by artists based in the South, as well as a few important loans, showcasing the diversity of talent in contemporary Southern photography. The New South is a complicated, culturally varied and determined place, but it still yields images in which life lies painfully close to the surface. Images of architecture, landscapes, and people, whether documentary or personal, are all imbued with a distinct sense of place. Southerners all, the artists have filtered their responses to the region through unique and highly individual sensibilities. Included in the exhibition are works by Emmet Gowin, Sally Mann, and Pamela Pecchio.
The exhibition is made possible through the generous support of Arts$, The Hook, Albemarle Magazine, and Charlottesville Welcome Book, Ivy Publications LLC.
